A hill that I will die on is that when you consume a piece of art online, you can feel the heart put into it. It’s a weird feeling, but the effort and emotional investment can be felt even across the world.

Whether it’s some hidden 6th sense, or a deep empathy buried in human nature, we can all collectively appreciate projects that are a labor of love.

It’s this same sentiment that’s been stuck in my head this past week, as we’ve started to get back initial cuts from the filmmakers.

From liminal shots in Finland, Dystopian set design in West Texas, to raw human moments between two lovers. It’s not only the compositions, color and cinematography that stand out—but the sheer amount of effort these filmmakers are putting into these projects.

I’ve personally seen my roommates (Schyguyy & Jonah) putting days into foley, staying up late scoring, putting film footage on vhs tape-running it through a CRT-then back into digital-for certain scenes. It’s unreal how much love is being put into these projects.

And I suppose this email is a reminder that this festival is not only a place to learn and meet other creators, but a moment to celebrate all of these filmmakers.

To uplift and cherish the few who, regardless of the forgettable nature of social —continue to pursue perfection. It’s something we ought to all pursue.
