The Latest News In The Camp Community
WOOT WOOT!
I’m writing from the CAMP HQ today, this week has been incredible for the team. We can feel the momentum that followed post Base Camp and we’re riding the wave!
There have been lots of amazing opportunities that have come our way and I want to say thank you to everyone who has been supportive of this community & our mission. We have some exciting things planned that I can’t unveil just yet…
However, I want to touch on something that Simon mentions in his next YouTube video. A portion of what he discusses is the role that community plays in someone’s success.
Being a part of a community of like-minded and creative individuals not only gives you the backbone to fall on for support but I also believe it amplifies “luck” for everyone connected to the community, including us. What I’m trying to say is that without you guys, this would not be possible.
We’re bootstrapping this entire business/community. We haven’t raised any outside money, we don’t plan to. Max, Simon, and Ryan haven’t made a penny from Creator Camp and I’ve been working a part-time job for the past year and a half to support myself in addition to running Creator Camp full-time.
I’m excited to announce that we’re in a position now where I am ready to leave my part-time job (just put my 2 weeks in today) because of the amount of momentum and excitement around Creator Camp. If you’re a creator or entrepreneur looking for a part-time gig, one just opened up @inc magazine.
Once again, thank you, I feel beyond grateful.
Anyway, enough about me, you can find some amazing things that happened in the CC world this week. ALSO, this week’s vlog is super special.
Cristina, a member of our team, cold-emailed almost a year ago. Since then she’s been a fundamental part of everything we do. She filmed and edited this week’s edition of the vlog!
Community Vlog #7 - setting yourself up for serendipity.
Lexin Yuan Upload 🎥
Lexin Yuan is an illustrator we met in person at Base Camp during week one. She explained to us that TV, movies, and books are what shaped her childhood and that a primary reason she creates today is to be a part of that for other people.
A few days ago, Lexin uploaded a video titled “Documenting is just the first step”. The video outlines and shares her experience at Base Camp but more importantly she covers why & how to document intentionally. The three questions she asks herself are:
Who am I documenting this for and why?
How do I want to remember this?
What form should these memories take?
Something interesting that caught my attention was Lexin’s intention to remember her first impression of everyone at Base Camp. Specifically, what made everyone unique, special, and weird. To capture this she sketched every individual who attended Base Camp.
As she puts it “to draw is to understand.”
In addition, last month, Lexin applied for an open character design position, which is already extremely rare in America. However, this position was particularly special because it opened up at Avatar Studios, a subsidiary of Nickeledon.
Avatar is a show that Lexin and many of us grew up watching. Likewise, the style of art in Avatar is the style that Lexin has practiced the most. If you see Lexin around wish her the best of luck!
CAMPERS TAKE OVER NYC 🏙
The return of Mike Ruffalo!
This was an eventful week in NYC for the camp community. The week kicked off with a Shopify x MrBeast event that a number of you guys attended. It was incredible seeing everyone (Alex, Ethan, Danny, Clint, James, TK, and Elliot) run into our beloved friend Mike Ruffalo from Shopify.
I kept getting photos and seeing stories of everyone running into him at the event and dinner.
In addition, the team and I were excited to see all our friends in the camp community who recently attended Base Camp meeting up throughout the week in the city.
It was also Halloween weekend - it was very cool to see friends getting creative & dressing up. Put in your votes for the best costume!
Discover Connection Intern?
We’ve met some local creators since moving to Austin, TX. One of our new friends, Brad, runs the channel Discover Connection.
If you’re familiar with Brad’s channel, amazing! If not that’s okay too, his channel primarily focuses on human connection and that a fulfilling life is one full of connection.
Last spring he did a series where he crossed America solely on the kindness of strangers. Being a creator is often a lonely pursuit, hence why we started Creator Camp.
Brad shared this same sentiment and told us how he’s looking to build out a team for his channel, people who would want to rally behind this mission, ideally people in Austin!
He’s primarily looking for an editor but is also open to other positions, if you feel like you’re potentially a good fit or know someone who might be interested let us know :)
Some Fun Extra Things & Opportunities 🙌
Clint’s song OLD NEWS is approaching 10,000 streams on Spotify!
Yesterday was Natalie Lynn’s birthday! Happy Birthday, Natalie, we hope you had an incredible day, you deserve it!
James Seo (The Korean NPC) just finished his mission to collaborate with the Chainsmokers! Congrats James!
We’re also seeking additional support over at Creator Camp if anyone is interested in a 3-month internship. Feel free to fill out this form. We are preparing to kick this off in the next week!
We started a Creator Camp running club through Strava. Last week our winner was Annie Dang - you can sign up and run with us here!
Collectibles! We have ONLY ~5 extra hoodies from Camp 2.0 that we won’t be restocking. They’ve been sitting at my house for some time so we thought we’d put them out in the world along with a “more than content” poster featuring Needle Rock Lodge.
